On an adventure with Bob: freedom and cuddles

At Gutsy we are incredibly proud of our ambassadors. Each and every one of them is Inspiring people with extraordinary stories . What unites them is their unique bond with their dogs. Together they experience the most wonderful adventures, enjoy spending time with their best friends, and inspire others to do the same.

So too Maya, Floris and Bob, who we interviewed for this article.

We're Maya and Floris , an inseparable team since 2013. We're true outdoors people and love spending our time in nature, and if we had a choice, in the mountains. That's where our hearts truly lie. 2021 was a crazy year, partly because of the purchase of our house (read: a major renovation project), but mainly because we learned in March that our long-awaited puppy was born. He's been with us since May 2021, making him our best friend for almost four years. Bob is an Australian Labradoodle, and since he's been with us, he's become an indispensable part of our lives and adventures.

How long have you been traveling with your camper?

Our first real vanlife experience was in 2020, when we traveled to the Dolomites. After all our tent trips, our first campervan (an empty van with a mattress inside) was a real luxury.
Ever since Bob was a little puppy, he'd been traveling in our campervan. His first real trip was to the French Alps and Switzerland, and ever since, he's been just as crazy about traveling as we are. In 2023, we upgraded our campervan, bought a larger model, and completely transformed it into our second home. Fidel the van, Bob, and a view of the mountains—that's all we need.

Where did your trip go and what were the highlights?

Our last trip was back to Switzerland – Bob's third time there. Switzerland never disappoints. This time it was a short three-day adventure, during which we enjoyed sun-drenched hikes through breathtaking landscapes. We explored Lake Oeschinen, climbed the Augstmatthorn, and took the cable car to Mürren to hike in the ski resort. Three unforgettable hikes that we highly recommend!

What do you like about traveling with a camper?

Whichever vanlifer you ask this question of, ultimate freedom will always be in the answer. We're no different. We find the realization that you need so little to be happy so refreshing. We also love how immersed camper life is in the moment. In our busy daily lives, we sometimes forget about the present moment. Just enjoying being outdoors, living day by day. Want to stay another night in a beautiful spot? No problem. The simplicity brings us complete peace.

What does Bob think of van life?

Bob is a true natural at van life. He's completely embraced it and loves traveling with us. He also knows that during our trips, we're mostly outdoors, spending a lot of time with him and hiking a loooot. And hiking is his all-time favorite thing to do. So, for him, it's a dream life! The cutest part is that in the mornings, he can't wait for us to let him cuddle in bed before we start our day. Afterward, we enjoy a nice, quiet breakfast together, and Bob enjoys his Gutsy kibble.

What do you enjoy about going on adventures with Bob?

We simply can't imagine traveling without Bob. He not only brings life and joy to our days but also ensures countless wonderful encounters along the way. Traveling with him makes it easy to connect with other travelers – Bob is a real conversation starter! What's more, mornings with him are extra special; we often start our days with hugs and his cheerful presence, which always makes us laugh. His playful energy and unconditional love make every adventure even more beautiful.

Do you have any tips for traveling with a dog?

Always provide a comfortable space for your dog in the camper, a place they consider their own safe haven. Bring familiar items like their favorite toy or blanket.
After losing Bob once in the Slovenian Alps, in the middle of a mountain range with hardly any tourists around us, we're seriously considering putting a tracker on his collar. I could give you 101 more tips, but every owner knows their dog best, and I think it's always most important to listen to your dog's signals.

But most importantly: enjoy! For a dog, being on the road is often the greatest adventure there is. Let's feed the dog's adventures together.

Thank you Maya & Bob for your story!
