The AB InBev de Spoelberch family took over the pet specialty store Tom & Co this week. She is not the only one who sees potential in the booming pet sector. Bicycle trailers, sustainable superfoods and medication, dog owners are happy to open their wallets for them.

Dog chefs are big business. The dog food sector is reinventing itself, with insect chunks or fresh meals that are carefully composed by algorithms. Tastier, healthier and above all more sustainable, the sector claims.

Gutsy started as a research project by Ghent University students Jack Lathouwers and Achilles Hannecart, but turned into a start-up that develops revolutionary, hybrid and sustainable animal food.

Two Ghent students develop animal food based on insects and won prizes for that project at Expedition DO!, the start-up program of Ghent University.

Insect-based dog food. That is what Achilles Hannecart (23) and Jack Lathouwers (24), two students from Ghent University, have developed. “The food is not only more sustainable, because it does not contain meat, but also healthier for your dog. And it's also just as tasty," he said.
